Not many people know this, but plastic bags are NOT made out of oil - they're made from Natural Gas. It's a subtle distinction and I know that you only get gas where there is oil, but I think it's important to get our facts straight in the debate.

As it turns out paper bags may be even worse than plastic in terms of oil/energy use. Although paper bags do not pose the same pollution threat blowing around in the wind and into the oceans.

My belief is that ALL disposable bags should be taxed so that economics encourage the use of reusable bags instead of disposable ones.

The problem isn't the fact that oil is used to make the bags, the problem is most of the bags aren't being recycled. Whether the bags are being thrown in the trash (they don't decompose very well) or they are being tossed outside (they are an environmental hazard), they just are bad news. Yes, there are some people who do recycle them, but there are still too many people who don't.
